Interview - RDKPL
"strange sounds within imaginable limits electronic noises in the audible spectrum"
RDKPL is in fact not new in this scene. The Czechia's noisemaker has existed in the sounds and noises industries since mid-1994. Yes, it's been 30 years - 3 decades of free-style / experimental electronic noiseounds! I'm honestly at a loss for words reflecting on how great RDKPL has been exploring and colonizing this scene through his works, for all this time and it continues non-stop! In his busy schedule, Radek Kopel is still willing to spare time for the following interview.
Interview by Jiwa
[01] Hey mate! Here's a simple interview but we truly need your great answers. First of all, introduce yourself.
Radek Kopel: Hi Jiwa and readers! Radek Kopel from Czech republic - noisounds maker.
[02] What made you dig Noise sound arts / scene? It seems that you have been in this industry for so long, please share your experience.
Radek Kopel: I look for aggressive, raw, intense, extreme, abstract, uncatchy music, so I found Japanese noise scene in the mid 90s. Right these times I formed Napalmed - industrial noise group. We performed hundreds times within Czech republic and few times outside. Band stops in 2014, right 20 years of activity. I formed new band called Eine Stunde Merzbauten, and beside follow recording and live performing solo as RDKPL.
[03] What is the meaning behind the name RDKPL? Tell us more about the history of the establishment of this project?
Radek Kopel: RDKPL simply means RaDeK koPeL. I did many recordings under various aliases and their variants, but actually I am RDKPL only. Solo project is not new of the last times, as I created solo recordings when Napalmed exists.
[04] What or who has influenced / inspired you to make you decide to create RDKPL?
Radek Kopel: The main influence were big names of Japanese noise, such as Merzbow, Gerogerigegege, Aube, Masonna, Violent Onsen Geisha, and many other, but of course many underground acts: Government Alpha, Painjerk, Outermost, Sukora, Mammaracho and numerous more. To be right, feelings from music listening, all is inside my noisounds.
[05] In detail, can you elaborate on the direction and sound nuances of RDKPL?
Radek Kopel: The main direction is noise itself what looks simple, but for me it is very complicated. No one line, continously changing. Last years I focused on minimal gear using, but with maximal output effect. It is not comparable to usual harsh noise, static noise or HNW, but recently I also like sound refinement, clarity and airiness. Beside "noise" you could hear, some of my recordings are: glitch, experimental, downtempo, no wave, electroacoustic, industrial. Either way, it's always about one-take free improvisation recordings with no post production, mixing and other like that works. Same in my room, same at the studio, same on the stage.
[06] Do you have any special selections (best or favorite releases) from the RDKPL discography?
Radek Kopel: Personally I do not selections like that. I do not browsing over my discography as no time to do that, hehehe!
[07] How do you see the future of RDKPL?
Radek Kopel: I will continue as long as I enjoy playing and searching for sounds. Nothing more, nothing less.
[08] What's your current playlist?
Radek Kopel: I was big music and noise listener some longer time ago. From weirdo jazz, freak folk, strange pop, wild grindcore, alternative rock, ebm, industrial to metal things. No I fully focused on my creating, so only from time to time I will taste friends' recommendations.
[09] What are your viewpoints on the present movement of noise scene internationally?
Radek Kopel: I mostly listen to projects on the compilations/splits and collaborations I joined. Too many active pals, what is GREAT!
[10] Thanks for all of your super cool answers. Please say something to close this interview.
Radek Kopel: Dear Jiwa, THANX alot for questions, interest in RDKPL and support at all. Superb there exist people like you!
